All Rachel wanted to do was to meet up with Sarah and Jason privately to discuss the case. She caught Raggie on her way out of the medical centre and asked him to get Sarah to call her on her mobile as soon as she could. Relieved at dodging Waverley’s bullet, she then made her way down to the staff dining room.

Brad was sitting alone holding his head when she took the seat opposite.

“Got a headache, by any chance?” Rachel deliberately raised her voice.

“Shush. My head’s killing me.”

Rachel rubbed the bruise on her own. “So’s mine.”

Brad peered through bloodshot eyes. “Did I do that?”

“Don’t you remember?”

“Not much. It’s a bit of a blur. I remember Ethan giving me a mouthful, though. He’s not getting away with that. Has he forgotten I’m now his manager?”

“From where I’m sitting, you should be thankful he rescued you from making a fool of yourself. And even more importantly, from getting the sack.”

“Was I that bad?”

“You were about to punch Jordon Harding in the face. Instead, you thumped me when I stopped you.”

“Sorry, mate.” Brad filled a glass with water.

A waiter took their dinner orders, giving Brad a knowing smirk. Word must have spread.

“So what was the argument really all about?”

“Dunno.”

“Yes, you do. Were you jealous of Jordon because he was close to Patsy?”

“Why should I be jealous?”

“Come on, Brad, I’ve heard you were in love with her. That nonsense about a one-night stand doesn’t wash, especially not after this afternoon’s performance.”

“Some people should keep their big mouths shut.” Brad took a gulp of water. “You got any paracetamol?”

Rachel reached into her bag and took out a pack of tablets, pushing them across the table. Once he had swallowed down two in one go, he handed them back.

“Keep them. Your need’s greater. I’ve got more in my room.”

Dinner arrived. Rachel declined wine, joining Brad with a glass of water. After a few mouthfuls of braised steak, Brad looked up.

“Okay, I suppose you deserve an explanation, seeing as I walloped you. I don’t usually go around hitting women, or anyone else for that matter, know what I mean?”

“So what prompted this lapse of judgement?” Rachel smiled, almost enjoying Brad’s discomfort, as he was the cause of her throbbing head. Perhaps she should have had two paracetamol herself.

“You’re wrong about Patsy liking that geezer. He’s a slimeball if ever I saw one. I cornered her last night before the, erm—”

“Before the accident.”

“Yep. I’d seen her arguing with that Jordon fella a few times. I could tell she wasn’t happy. I don’t know what was going on, but I think he was bullying her.”

More like she was bullying him, Rachel kept the thought to herself.

“So what did she tell you when you asked her about it?”

“Told me to mind my own business. I told her it was my business if we were ever going to make things work between us. She told me not to worry, that she had it all under control, but she was pleased I would protect her.
